Monitoring in Azure with Unity iQ

 21 July 2016  blogs  Matthew Carr  3min read

A lot of organizations have challenges checking if they have full hybrid redundancy built into their cloud environments. Many find it even more difficult to perform SLA monitoring across private and public cloud environments

Savision’s Unity iQ platform offers a solution that helps monitor your business services across most hybrid cloud environments. The solution allows organizations to maintain visibility of critical workloads that run in Microsoft Azure as well as API access that can extend coverage to AWS (Amazon Web Services) and other cloud platforms. Cloud administrators can easily relate workloads to critical business services created in Unity iQ.

Let’s focus on Azure. If you are using an Azure IaaS deployment, we are able to take state information from the host virtual machines. By continuously capturing the health of Microsoft Azure resources, any state change will then directly affect the health of the related business services. When there is an incident, Unity iQ lets you contextually link to the affected resource in Microsoft’s Azure Portal to examine the underlying cause and work to resolve the incident.

Is your hybrid cloud fully redundant?

One of the main benefits of investing in a hybrid cloud architecture is to build redundancy between your public and private environments. So, if your private data-center fails, your critical business services can be activated or accessed via Azure. Or, if your public cloud fails, which happens occasionally, your public cloud can fail-over to the private cloud.

Redundant architectures across cloud infrastructures allow organizations to guard against platform outages. For instance, Microsoft Azure had a highly publicized cross-region outage on Nov. 18 2014 in compute services of nearly 40 hours, according to CloudHarmony.

Unity iQ helps connect with your private cloud monitoring systems and public resources into a single view. By using our dynamic service dependency mapping, it is possible to determine quickly which of your critical business applications are actually deployed in a hybrid manner. By monitoring the business service’s state across a hybrid deployment, we are able to show which business services are at risk from a single point of failure and which should be shared across a hybrid environment.

SLA tracking

Unity iQ further allows for SLA tracking of hybrid business services. This allows IT organizations to monitor, report, and enforce SLA guarantees from such cloud platforms. For example, Microsoft offers a 99% up-time target depending on the type of deployment described here:

https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/support/legal/sla/

Using our SLA monitoring and tracking algorithms makes life easier when measuring up-time for Azure resources. It can be used as basis to report back to Microsoft when an SLA has been breached and to claim credits for your Azure subscription. Savision’s products have helped numerous customers identify and document service outages that allowed them to claim credits back on their Microsoft Azure subscription.
