How-to: Aggregate data from multiple monitoring systems into a single service definition

 26 May 2016  blogs  Dennis Rietvink  3min read

Unity iQ is the new platform that finally makes it possible to start monitoring IT and business services across your existing best of breed monitoring systems. The real-operational status can be enriched with information on open incidents from your ITSM system and with business impact information.  As a result, you get a true holistic service view and correlated alerting to that will greatly improve your service delivery.

In this article we will briefly introduce the first steps to aggregate data from multiple monitoring systems into a single service definition.

Unity iQ is a vendor-agnostic solution that can be deployed in your datacenter or to any hosted environment, even if your monitoring and ITSM systems are still on-prem.  The Unity iQ agent interacts as a gateway between the Unity iQ web application and your monitoring and ITSM systems to allow for different deployment scenarios.

To install Unity iQ you need Internet Information Service 7.0 (or higher) and a Microsoft SQL 2012 (or higher). Installing the Unity iQ web application and the agent will not take more than 15 minutes. If you don’t have your hands on a copy yet request your trial here.  The first run experience in Unity iQ will automatically guide you through the necessary steps to complete the initial configuration and to create your first service. Once your first service has been created, you can start adding configuration items (CIs) to the different service perspectives.

Installing Unity iQ

The end user, application and infrastructure perspectives are used to aggregate configuration items (CIs) from different monitoring systems that are connected to Unity iQ. This way you can see at a glance if end users are impacted, and if the root cause is in the application or infrastructure stack.

To add CIs you can use the inline authoring capabilities of the Unity iQ console. In the example shown in this blog, Unity iQ has been connected to two SCOM management groups, one SolarWinds Orion instance and one Azure subscription. CIs can be added manually or via dynamic rules.

Two quick examples are shown in our 1 minute video.

The service status is now based on CIs from different monitoring systems.

Services Overview

Unity iQ is a smart and easy-to-deploy solution that reduces the complexity of a siloed IT environment. The first release supports Azure, SolarWinds, Nagios, System Center Operations Manager, ServiceNow and we will be adding more systems soon. It has many capabilities, which we will cover in our upcoming blogs, so stay tuned if you want to know more about how it can benefit your organization and connect the worlds between your IT, helpdesk and business teams.
